Day 2

1. What did you do today?

Today we extracted artificial colouring from candies and used thin layer chromatography to separate the colours. We then identified the retention values of the colourants.

2. What did you learn today?

I learnt that different chemicals and solutions have different uses. I was also reminded of how to calculate retention values. I also learnt how to do a more detailed version of the chromatography that I learnt last year.

3. How do you feel about today's activities

I feel that today's experiment was more of a revision of what we did in chemistry last year, but more complicated as the processes are more detailed and require more attention. Nevertheless, I am sure that today will aid me in learning chemistry in the near future.

Chromatography can be used to test for colouring in clothing to see the amount of dyes in the fabric and to observe how interesting colours are formed if any.

4. What new questions do you have regarding this discipline?

In what other ways can chromatography be used to improve lives?
How can we integrate chromatography in our daily lives?
